Hello All, here is the start of my big handsome black jaguar! Creating the backdrop first to complement the animal is a lot less stressful than attempting it after you've put so much time and effort into the animal part! A previous lesson learnt the hard way :)
I have chosen a green / dull yellow mix with effects representing the dense forest. I love these abstract-type colourful backgrounds. He will be such a strong presence on the painting I wanted to brighten up the feel of the painting with some complementary colour combinations. At the moment I have only marked in where his features sit and his subtle markings - at this point he could be an orange jaguar! The third in my big cat series, with each one I learn so much more about each individual animal and also as my own painting technique evolves :)

can't wait to see it finished!!
Me too, looks very promising. What paper do you use Julia? It looks quite textured.
thankyou, Bev I use W&N cotman watercolour paper, it is slightly textured but the photo has probably cast the texture shadows a bit more than they actually are,I hope this helps, Jules
I look forward to seeing the next step...looks like a winner!
Looking good so far, I have been learning alot about the cats from your pictures as well. Thanks for sharing.
